From planning to installation

1. Plan the location and radio link

   Choose where to measure and where to place a gateway with power and internet access. Consider terrain, obstacles, mounting and access for maintenance.

   The measurement site does not need Wi-Fi or mobile coverage. Data travels by radio to the gateway, directly or through repeaters. Solar-powered equipment also needs a suitable position for the solar panel.

2. Get access to Bakvind

   Contact us to get a username and password and have a weather station created.

   Once you have access, you can log in and set up the devices for your station.

3. Choose equipment for the location

   Choose the sensor, node, gateway and any repeaters based on location and distances. The Hardware page lists the components and supported variants.

   The theoretical radio range is up to 20 km, but this is not a guaranteed distance. Our test link covers 9 km and only just works. Terrain and placement matter; you can experiment with antennas and positioning to improve the connection.

4. Set up the devices and install firmware

   Log in to the website and register and configure all devices. Then download the firmware for each device and install it using a USB cable. This can be done from a PC or with the dedicated Bakvind Android app.

   Each device gets its own firmware with a unique identity and its configured settings built in. You do not need to enter the identity manually afterwards.

5. Connect the gateway to Wi-Fi

   The gateway needs the Wi-Fi network name and password to send measurements to Bakvind.

   You can provide these when preparing the firmware, or set them later through the gateway’s built-in web server.

6. Test everything before installation

   Test the sensor, node and gateway together somewhere accessible. Check that fresh measurements appear on the correct station page before installing the equipment at a remote location.

   Also check the radio link at the intended locations. After installation, confirm that measurements continue to arrive and that the readings make sense.
